Military, Overseas and Out-of-State Voters

Anchorage residents living outside of the U.S. and active military personnel away from home, including spouses and voting-age dependents, are eligible to register and vote by mail using a temporary address.

+ Confirm You Can Vote

To be eligible to vote in the Municipality of Anchorage, you must be:

Qualified to vote in State of Alaska elections, per these requirements:

  • A U.S. citizen
  • At least 18 years old by the time of the election

Registered to vote at an address within the Municipality of Anchorage for at least 30 days before Election Day.

Register to vote with the State of Alaska using your address within the Municipality of Anchorage at least 30 days before Election Day: voterregistration.alaska.gov


+ Sign Up to Track Your Ballot

In the Municipality of Anchorage, all qualified, registered voters are mailed a ballot for each municipal election. Sign up to receive text, email or phone notifications on the status of your ballot from outbound to accepted: anchoragevotes.com      


+ Complete the Application to Vote at a Temporary Address​

If you will be away and unable to receive your ballot at your registered mailing address during the 21-day period before Election Day, complete the Application to Vote at a Temporary Ad​dress​​​​​.​

Submit the application to the Municipal Clerk's Office by 5pm one week before Election Day: 

  • Submit your application via email: TemporaryAddress@anchorageak.gov
  • Submit your application by mail: MOA Elections, Attn: Temporary Address Team, PO Box 196659, Anchorage, AK, 99519​​

If your application is submitted by March 13, your ballot package will be mailed to your temporary address. 

If your application is submitted between March 14 and March 28, a replacement ballot package will be mailed to your temporary address.

If you will not be available to receive mail at a mailing address during the 21-day period before Election Day, contact us at elections@anchroageak.gov as soon as possible to learn about other options to vote. 


+ Vote Your Ballot

Your ballot package includes a ballot, secrecy sleeve, voter instructions and a ballot return envelope.

1. Follow the instructions included in your mailed ballot package.
2. When you are finished marking your ballot, place it in the secrecy sleeve.
3. Place your ballot, enclosed by the secrecy sleeve, in the ballot return envelope.
4. Read and sign the Voter Declaration on the outside of the ballot return envelope.
5. Seal the ballot return envelope.​​


+ Return Your Voted Ballot

Return your ballot by mail as soon as possible. Voted ballots must be postmarked no later than Election Day, April 4, 2023. 

Returning your ballot on Election Day? Bring your ballot return package directly to the counter at the post office and ask a postal worker to hand-cancel the envelope to verify it was returned on time. ​
